Nature changes with the seasons—and so do we.

Trees bud, grow, and shed their leaves. Many animals migrate or hibernate. Our bodies also respond to seasonal changes, often in ways we don't even notice.

While modern life has softened the boundaries between the seasons with air conditioning, heating, and artificial lighting, changes in temperature, humidity, daylight, and our daily routines still influence our health.

Every summer, I hear the same question from patients:

"I feel fine. Why should I start treatment now?"

It's also the question many people ask when they first hear the phrase "Treat Winter Conditions in Summer."

If you're not sick, why seek treatment?

And if your symptoms usually appear in winter, why address them during the hottest months of the year?

The answer isn't just about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It's about a different way of thinking about health.

We're already familiar with the idea of preparing ahead.

We service our cars before they break down. We inspect our roofs before the rainy season arrives. Many of us get a flu shot before flu season—not because we're sick, but because we'd rather prevent illness than recover from it.

Our health deserves the same kind of attention.

Instead of waiting for recurring problems to return, why not support the body while it's in a stronger position to respond?

This is the philosophy behind Treat Winter Conditions in Summer, a longstanding wellness approach in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The term "winter conditions" doesn't refer to illnesses that occur only in winter. Instead, it describes health concerns that tend to return or worsen as the weather turns colder.

Common examples include frequent colds, chronic cough, seasonal allergies, asthma, or neck, back, and joint pain that becomes more noticeable in cold weather. Some people also find themselves feeling unusually cold, tired, or low in energy throughout the winter months.

Many of these symptoms improve—or even disappear—during the summer.

But feeling better doesn't always mean the body has fully regained its balance. Sometimes, warmer weather simply places less stress on the body, making symptoms less noticeable.

In TCM, summer is considered the season when the body's vitality is at its peak. It's an ideal time to strengthen the body's resilience and better prepare for the colder months ahead. This seasonal approach is one of the reasons Treat Winter Conditions in Summer has been practiced for generations.

The hottest days of summer, known as the Sanfu Days, are traditionally regarded as the best time for these treatments. Depending on each person's individual constitution and health needs, therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and Sanfu herbal patches may be recommended.

Of course, no single treatment is right for everyone.

Two people may both experience joint pain or frequent colds, yet the underlying causes can be completely different. That's why TCM emphasizes individualized care. Treatment is based not only on symptoms, but also on each person's overall constitution and health pattern.

There is a well-known saying in Traditional Chinese Medicine:

"The best physician treats disease before it develops."

This doesn't mean predicting the future. Rather, it reminds us that good health is built through ongoing care—not simply by treating illness after it appears.

Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, managing stress, and supporting the body when appropriate are all part of maintaining long-term wellness.

At East West Integrative Medicine, we believe every patient has a unique health story. Our goal is not only to relieve today's symptoms, but also to restore balance, strengthen resilience, and help patients better adapt to seasonal changes.

If you find yourself dealing with recurring colds, allergies, chronic cough, or joint and muscle pain every fall and winter, summer may be an excellent time to schedule a wellness evaluation. For patients who are appropriate candidates, treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and Sanfu herbal patches can be incorporated into a personalized care plan to help prepare for the seasons ahead.

Good health isn't simply about recovering after illness.

More often, it's something we build little by little—especially when we're feeling well. This summer may be the perfect time to invest in your health before winter arrives.
