Supporting the Body and Spirit Through Every Stage of Healing

What Is Oncology Massage?

Oncology massage is a gentle, specialized form of bodywork designed specifically for people undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment. Practitioners are trained to modify pressure, positioning, and techniques to accommodate medical devices, treatment side effects, and the unique needs of each person.

Unlike deep tissue or sports massage, oncology massage uses light, soothing pressure to bring comfort, reduce physical tension, and promote emotional grounding.

Benefits of Massage During Cancer Treatment

Massage during cancer care isn’t just about feeling good in the moment—research shows real physiological and psychological benefits. Clinical studies have shown that oncology massage may help:

  • Reduce pain and muscle tension

  • Alleviate fatigue and insomnia

  • Ease nausea

  • Improve mood and emotional well-being

  • Support lymphatic flow and reduce swelling

  • Increase overall quality of life

Clinical Evidence:

  • A 2023 meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials found that massage significantly reduced cancer-related pain, especially in patients with hematological cancers and during the perioperative period. Short sessions of 10–30 minutes over a week or more were particularly effective, with no serious adverse effects.

  • A pilot study of home-based massage for people with metastatic cancer showed immediate improvement in pain, stress, and comfort—even after just one session.

Is Massage Safe During Cancer Treatment?

Yes—with proper training and thoughtful modifications, massage is considered safe for most individuals in or after cancer treatment. At our clinic, your comfort and safety are always our top priorities. We take the following into account:

  • Treatment side effects (like low blood counts, skin sensitivity, or neuropathy)

  • Port placements or surgical sites

  • Bone density and risk of lymphedema

  • Your energy level and comfort with touch

A Whole-Person Approach to Healing

Massage is more than physical therapy—it can be a moment of peace in the storm. When you're undergoing something as life-altering as cancer, gentle touch can be a powerful reminder that your body deserves care, kindness, and connection.

At East West Integrative Medicine, our massage therapists are not only highly trained but also bring trauma-informed awareness and heartfelt presence to every session.

Both Jessica Ogawa and Tom Dempsey have extensive experience working with and caring for those in cancer treatment and recovery.

You Are Not Alone

Navigating cancer can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone. Therapeutic massage offers a moment to exhale, to be nurtured, and to gently reconnect with your body in a way that feels safe and restorative.
