HOW IT WORKS

Massage therapy is one of the best ways to achieve deep relaxation and allow the body to self rejuvenate. Besides the overall relief of stress, massage is a very effective treatment in most musculo-skeletal pain related injuries. Because muscles react to surrounding bone injury, nerve compressions, or other injured muscles, it is important to assess muscular imbalances and address them with massage therapy. Additional benefits of massage include:
  • Increased lymph drainage and blood circulation
  • Improved posture and body alignment through proper muscle balance
  • Increased awareness of habitual holding patterns that may be creating muscular imbalances
  • Inhibiting and breaking up scar tissue formation
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Alleviated discomfort during pregnancy

jeffJeff Brown, CMT
Jeff's goal is to find a comfortable balance between relaxation and effective therapeutic work. As a massage therapist, he believes that effective work generally should be an overall enjoyable and enriching process. Active participation from both the client and the therapist is essential for progress and growth.

Experiences helping people manage the effects of Multiple Sclerosis taught Jeff to be curious and listen carefully in order to provide the best possible care.

In massage and therapeutic bodywork, there are a vast number of modalities and techniques to employ. Jeff discerns which of these best serve the immediate and long-term needs of the whole person, and remains open for intuition and feedback to guide the way. Providing for others inspires him beyond his work as a massage therapist and into his daily life.

Tom Dempsey, CMT
Tom has practiced massage in San Francisco for many years and has enjoyed working with people with a variety of therapeutic needs and wishes. His study of movement and energy, within the practice of the martial art Aikido, led to his initial study of massage therapy over 20 years ago.

Having initially trained with Judith McKinnon at the McKinnon Institute in Swedish/Esalen massage, Tom expanded his training in a range of modalities including Shiatsu, lymphatic and deep tissue massage techniques.

His study with Tom Hendrickson, at the Hendrickson Method Institute of Orthopedic Massage and Manual Therapy, and recent training in Neuromuscular Therapy, has enabled him to work very effectively with an array of orthopedic conditions for pain relief and rehabilitation from trauma and injuries.

KathyKathy Martin, CMT
Kathy has been practicing therapeutic massage since 1991. Drawn to study massage through her long-standing interest in alternative health care, Kathy first trained in Swedish massage at the World School in San Francisco. Then, at McKinnon Institute in Oakland, she focused on sports and deep tissue massage. Complementing these techniques, Kathy became a certified Infant Massage Instructor and trained in prenatal massage.

At Alive and Well in Marin, she concentrated on Neuromuscular Reprogramming, which uses a form of kinesthetic conversation with the body in order to imprint new learnings on the brain's motor control center to replace damaged imprints due to trauma, operations or repetitive strain.

A Reike master, Kathy uses her skills and training to help facilitate the body's innate sense of healing.

MarnieMarnie McCurdy, L.Ac., M.S., CMT
Marnie was first certified in Shiatsu massage in 1996 from the San Francisco School of Massage. The following year, she received a second certification in sports and deep tissue massage from the McKinnon Institute. Her other training includes TMJ release, visceral manipulation, Breema, Tui-na, reflexology, prenatal, and hot stone massage.

Her approach uses a combination of these styles. Marnie offers one massage daily and also offers bodywork in combination with acupuncture treatment. To learn more about her acupuncture training, please visit the About Us page.

SaraSara Meghrouni, CMT
Sara has been a certified massage therapist for more than a decade, having trained at the School of Shiatsu and Massage and the Esalen Institute. Her specialties are Esalen massage, deep Swedish massage and cranio-sacral therapy. Her style creates a uniquely restorative and revitalizing experience.

Coming from a family of health care practitioners, Sara’s approach is both therapeutic and compassionate. Her focus simultaneously addresses both the physical and spiritual health of her clients. Depending on individual need, she also incorporates breath work and passive stretching to encourage a sense of overall well-being and ease within the body.

She has applied this approach to bodywork in caring for clients who have been critically ill and hospitalized, as well as donating her time and skill at San Francisco Zen Center Hospice.

TodTod Overstreet, CMT
Tod began his bodywork studies in 1991, focusing on Shiatsu and Thai massage. He later expanded his focus to include formal training in Swedish and deep tissue massage, cranio-sacral therapy, Reiki, and sports massage.

Traveling to Thailand in 1999, Tod attended a Thai massage course at Old Medicine Hospital, where he met his mentor, Asokananda, and spent several years under his guidance. During that time, Tod was also privileged to study with the renowned Pichet Boothammeand. Eventually, Tod assisted with his mentor's classes and was added to his roster of official teachers.

In 2004, he studied deep tissue myofascial release with master Rolfer, Art Riggs, and is currently a student of Tom Hendrickson's in the rigorous orthopedic massage program.

SusanSusan Priefert, CMT
Susan has been fascinated with the mind and body for as long as she can remember. Her training spans more than a decade, drawing on a variety of disciplines from massage and acupressure points to yoga. A graduate of the Massage Therapy Institute in Denver, Susan is trained in Swedish and deep tissue massage, neuromuscular release, myofascial release, cranio sacral therapy, and barefoot Shiatsu massage.

Recovering from a traumatic physical injury, she began studying Iyengar yoga, which helped on her journey to wellness. In addition to her massage training, Susan draws on her education in Reiki, multi-dimensional energy work and shamanic training. In her practice, she seeks to free, not only the muscles and tendons of her clients, but the energy inside each body she treats. Her specialties include head trauma, whiplash, brain injury, fatigue, tendonitis, carpal tunnel, and other types of arm pain.

LeslieLeslie Zanzalari, CMT
A recent arrival to San Francisco, Leslie has been a practicing massage therapist for almost 15 years. She attended the well-respected Somerset School of Massage in Somerset, NJ., focusing on neuromuscular therapy, sports massage, active assisted stretching, pre- and post-natal massage and deep tissue work.

A warm and dedicated practitioner, Leslie excels in adapting her technique to each person's individual needs — whether it involves the need to relax from everyday stress or applying intense concentration to relieve pain and tension in chronic trouble spots
